Red in color with a warm look, a friend brought over
This winter coat
Plenty of room for an expansive waist, one that mid
Winter can no longer hide the presence of new life
Growing inside
Two large pockets each with a flap offer room to warm
Hands or carry some snacks
Before passing this coat along I explored these two large
Pockets, remnants there made me smile, a few candy
Wrappers and eleven cents
For a brief moment a vision quest of school yard monitoring
And exhaled breath made visible upon seasonal winter air
The gift of a coat from a dear friend held stories within
Pockets of forgotten moments of winters now passed
Time shared in a school yard waiting for the bell to ring,
Enjoying the warmth of the classroom once again
Now this coat will be worn by another, and within its
Pockets new items will be stored, along with happy growth
The newness of an unborn, nestled beneath this winter coat
Safe from winter winds
If only this coat could write my story, for only it could tell the
Sights and sounds of children
The fierce howl of winter wind
The treasures that are briefly stored within two pockets
This coat waits excitedly to embrace new experiences, new
Places to see, new winds of change,
New life within to comfort and embrace.
