Experiencing a power outage
that delivers a sense of calm
external impulses have ceased
during this gift of stillness
my mind questions
how harmful these invisible
energies must be?
Unseen they pass
through walls and air, through
our bodies unaware, like silent
ghosts they wander
seeking a resting place. Now
a peaceful
nothingness
absence of electrical energies
humming obscured in the background
of each daily chore
for this moment, enraptured in
stillness I recall quiet country road
the depth of night so deep
we anticipated no danger, heard no noise
except the crickets and bull frogs that lent
music for our night
the magic of constellations teasing us to
learn, prompting us to question the vastness
of our world
Powerless, I think not this day
empowered yes I say
when lights are out and stillness comes
the soul can hear its song in harmony
with nature and all its finery
undecorated simplicity.

I lived for awhile in a mountain cabin. There was no running water or electricity. There was no TV. Once a day we went and sat in the car and listened to the national news. We learned to listen to nature, our own thoughts and each other. It was actually quite pleasant. I have never been much of a TV watcher since.
I hear you and agree wholeheartedly!
I don't watch tv but I'm afraid I'd miss my computer! When I was a logger though we lived in tents and cooked on the fire. Life was simple, yet very good.
wow!! beautiful!. youve captured that stillness
when lights are out and stillness comes
the soul can hear its song in harmony
with nature and all its finery
undecorated simplicity.
perfect!
Spot on, Pauline - isn't it funny, though we use man-made power all the time, for everything, and rely on it for the simplest things, it's so much more peaceful without it!
I love my walks with the dogs in the morning...with only the sound of birds and running water. And at home, the biggest buzzing culprit of breaking this peace has to be the computer (which, like Katie, I'd miss! :-( )
In contrast, my sister's family has several computers, which seem to be on all the time, along with the tv and a stereo... When I've slept over in their living room, I just can't sleep, because there's a constant noise of fans. But also, I feel everything is exuding some sort of harmful radiation, as you say here:
